Summary:
Based on local meteorological data and radiosonde records for the summit of Mauna Kea, statistics are established for weather conditions during observations and the site is considered in the free atmosphere. Seeing data recorded by observatories is then analyzed and compared to modeled seeing derived from free-atmosphere bulk meteorological data. Poor correlations between observed seeing and local weather conditions, as well as seeing at the various telescope facilities, suggest that most of the observed seeing is created within the domes or their immediate surroundings.
