Summary:
In 2001, the Mauna Loa Silversword, Argyroxiphium kauense, has experienced a severe decline in population size and distribution. In its recent past, three populations of which fewer than 1000 individuals remain on the island of Hawaii, are scattered across the former range of Mauna Loa that may have encompassed the mid-elevation slopes of this mountain and may have extended onto Hualalai volcano. This document addresses some of the issues that surround this decline such as goats, mouflon sheep, and pigs that were introduced to Hawaii. Also described are the populations that occurs in Kahaku Ranch, the Kapapala Forest Reserve, and the population that occurs in the Upper Waiakea Forest Reserve.
