Mauna Loa description and travel
Scientific expeditions Mauna Loa
- Summary:
- This document describes ascents that were made to Mauna Loa by a variety of foreigners to the islands such as Archibald Mezies, a Scottish botanist who accompanied the Vancouver to the Hawaiian Islands in 1794, by Reverend Joseph Goodrich, and by David Douglas both of whom might not have actually made an ascent to Mauna Loa in the early 1900s as claimed. Mention is also made of other mysteries and controversies that surround other (real or alleged) ascents that were made by other early explorers who may have attempted an ascent to Mauna Loa such as Captain James Cook who first arrived at Kealakekua Bay in 1779, John Ledyard, Corporal of Marines who traveled aboard the Resolution and literally and liberally copied an account that was made by John Rickman who was a lieutenant on the Discovery that accompanied Cook's ship. Reference is also made to ascents made by other explorers who may have confused Mauna Loa with Kilauea and mistakenly made reference to Mauna Kea when speaking of Mauna Loa.
