Summary:
This document describes the Mauna Kea silversword, (Argyroxiphium sandwicense ssp. sandwicense), an endemic plant lineage of the sunflower family, (Asteraceae), that is one of Hawaii's premier examples of adaptive radiation and a member of the silversword alliance. While once abundant in the subalpine and alpine habitats that occurred between the 8,500 and 12,500 foot elevation level of Mauna Kea, on the island of Hawaii, this plant species rapidly declined following the introduction of sheep and other alien ungulates that were brought to the island by European voyagers in the early 1790's. However, through a program that was initiated by the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources' Division of Forestry and Wildlife, this document describes a recovery effort that was initiated in the 1970s that would promote the recovery of the Mauna Kea silversword.
