Summary:
The Japanese National Large Telescope (JNLT) includes a 7.5 meter reflector with a monolithic thin meniscus main mirror that is made of material of extremely low thermal expansion coefficient. With the candidate site of Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaii, a wide range of technical studies were carried out by the JNLT Working Group in collaboration with specialists from the academic and the industrial sectors. This document describes the historical background of the JNLT project, the organizations that promoted it, the scientific motivations that lead to the design and construction of this telescope, its special technical features, and the possibility of an international collaboration regarding this telescope.
