Summary:
One of the least specialized tribes among the Papilionideae is the Sophoreae. The genus Sophora is divided into eleven sections and is one of the more specialized elements of the tribe that is characterized by heteromorphic corolla, auricles, wing petal sculpturing, keel petal adnation, and pockets on the keels that interlock with the wing petals. This paper describes the patterns of floral ontogeny in eight species of Sophora that includes two species that have been polinated by birds. In an effort to determine if ontogenetic evidence supports monophyly or nonmonophyly in Sophoreae, the pattern in Sophora will be compared to representatives of other sophoroid generic assemblages during this study.
