Summary:
This document describes the negative effects that the introduced Japanese white-eye (Zosterops japonicus) bird species had on the endangered Hawaii akepa (Loxops coccineus coccineus) and other native Hawaiian birds. The bill length, tarsus length, and mass were measured of seven species of Hawaiian birds plus the introduced Japanese white-eyes in a study that was done from 1987 - 2006 in the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on the Island of Hawaii. Morphological changes in native juveniles were associated with the increase in the white-eyes beginning in the year 2000 and are noted in this document.
