Summary:
According to a team led by ornithologist Leonard Freed of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, the "competition with an invasive species - the Japanese white-eye (Zosterops janonicus) has caused a population crash among a honeycreeper called the Hawaii Akepa (Loxops coccineus)." The Japanese White-eye competes with the Hawaii Akepa for food. However, officials at the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge say they have seen no long-term decline in the population.
