- Summary:
- This document describes how the death of the ohia (Metrosideros collina subsp. polymorpha), trees and other vegetation has been a major concern on the island of Hawaii. While the fungus, known as Phythophthora cinnamomi Rands, was implicated in the death of these trees as a result of rootlet necrosis, this experiment was done in an effort to determine if there was a relationship between the occurrence of the fungus known as Phthium vexans and the widespread decline of the ohia forests. However, no correlation was found between the ohia tree decline and the occurrence of the P. vexans in ohia tree roots or ohia forest soil even though the P. vexans caused rootlet necrosis of the ohia in greenhouse and field tests. In greenhouse tests, P. cinnamomi was a more virulent root pathogen than P. vexans.
