Summary:
Even though a wide variety of avian species were found in the Kohala Mountain Forest area in the late 1800's, it remains one of the least know areas in the Hawaiian archipelago. Here, one of the few specimens of the Ula-ai-hawane, (Ciridops anna), were found and this forest was reported to be one of the last strongholds of this and the Ou, (Psittirostra psittacea). However, since little ornithological work had been done in this region since 1900, the author of this paper conducted a censuses and recorded the breeding behavior of birds in the Kohala Mountain Forest in an effort to: define the composition of the present avifauna, to measure uniformity of species composition through the forest, to quantify the relative population numbers of each species found in this area, and to delimit the aspects of the breeding seasons. This study was done from 1969 - 1972.
