Summary:
The mongoose, a deliberate importation to the Hawaiian Islands, has been the subject of controversy with regard to whether or not it is an effective destroyer of rodents. Since much prejudice exists toward it with regard to its predation on domestic and wild birds in Hawaii, detailed information is needed due to its considerable economic importance and partly due to the lack of any comprehensive account of the behavior of this mammal in Hawaii. As a result, the purpose of this study was to assemble information on the distribution, behavior, ecology, and human values of the mongoose in Hawaii.
