Summary:
This document discusses factors that are contributing to the decline and extinction of the Hawaiian honeycreepers (Drepanidinae). As a result, a method that was used to determine the sex of these birds via the use of a Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based technique. It is believed that this technique that can be applied to at least four species of the honeycreepers, would provide a rapid and reliable method in which to optimize sex ratios within populations of endangered species that are subject to artificial manipulation through captive breeding programmes or geographic translocation.
