Summary:
The district of Kona includes a considerable portion of the western side of the island of Hawaii that includes portions of the mountains of Mauna Loa and Hualalai. In this document, the author describes birds such as the Loxops ("Akakani"), Oo (Acrulocercus nobilis), Finches (such as the Chloridops, Rhodacanthis, and Psittacirostra, the Hemignathus, Chasiempis, and Phaeornis), Ou (Loxioides bailleui), Ou po-papale (Psittacirostra psittacea), Koa Finch (Rhodacanthis palmeri), Palila (Chloridops kona), Loxops coccinea, Drepanididae, Himatione, Vestiaria coccinea, the short-billed Hemignathus (H. obscurus), the long-billed Hemignathus olivaceus, the Chasiempis (C. sandwichensis), Elepeio, Phaeornis obscurus, Hawk (Buteo solitarius), Crow (Corvus tropicus), Hemignathus Affinis (H. affinis), Loxops Ochracea, and the Palmeria Mirabilis. He also describes the trees and plants that grow in the various elevations of the district such the kukui, lehua, lantana, guava, prickly pear (or cactus), tree-ferns, lehua, koa, opiko, olomea, mamaki, kolea, papala, acacia, bastard sandal-wood (aaka), mamane, mamale, alii, and the ulei from which these birds feed. Also mentioned are vines, such as the Freycinetia (ieie) and maile, and other food sources such as the ohelo, pukiawe, and poha berries. Reference is also made to the lepidopterous larvae, off of which the Ou po-papale and the Koa Finch feed.
