Subject:
Amakihi Elepaio Nest building
Summary:
The article describes the discovery of an Amakihi (Loxops v. virens) building a nest on top of an Elepaio (Chasiempis s. sandwichensis) nest in a mamane (Sophora chrysophylla) tree on the northwestern slope of Mauna Kea at approximately 2,286 meter elevation. The Amakihi is a member of the endemic Hawaiian honeycreeper (Drepanididae) family and the Elepaio is an Old World Flycatcher (Muscicapidae). While more than 450 Amakihi nests were known to have been found on the island of Hawaii, at no other time has the author ever observed a bird of one species building a nest over the nest of another.
