Summary:
This document describes the newest telescope to be built on the 13,796 foot summit of Mauna Kea, on the island of Hawaii. Planned for completion in the Fall of 1991, this telescope, known as the W. M. Keck Observatory, is a 100 plus million dollar facility that will boast the world's largest and most powerful optical and infrared telescope. It will also add to the compliment of eight additional telescopes that are already in operation on this dormant volcano. Described here, is five years of planning and the obstacles that are encountered when one designs a telescope with large mirrors. This telescope will be made up of thirty-six hexagonal mirror segments that will form a honeycomb formation and create an image that will be equal to a mirror that is 10 feet in diameter.
