- Summary:
- This document describes the Lacey Act that was passed by Congress in 1900 that prohibited interstate trade of wildlife taken illegally, the signing of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in 1973 by President Richard Nixon that required federal authorities to identity threatened or endangered species and help them recover, but how the ESA became threatened as it hindered development. However, ESA supporters argued that weakening the law would a have far-reaching impact on society. In an effort to determine what it might take to save a species, a study was done and the author reports here on the status of ten species that were once classified as endangered, but through preservation efforts have returned from that classification. This includes the status of the Hawaiian palila and other species.
