Mauna Kea history
Kuiper, Gerard P., 1905-1973.
- Summary:
- The article describes the installation of an early telescope that was build at the 13,796 foot elevation of Mauna Kea. Known as the world's highest astronomical observatory, this telescope that was dedicated on 26 June 1970, would help man to study the very heavens from which Kane, the leading deity among the great Hawaiian gods, made the stars, planets, and the Earth on the 26th day of a month that is far removed from present times. Also described is the history of this facility that began in 1963 when the National Aeronautics and Space Administration sponsored a study that was done by G. P. Kuiper, from the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, who conducted tests in Hawaii for the purpose of finding a place in which to construct and astronomical observatory.
