Summary:
This study was conducted from February through July, 1991 at the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge that is located at approximately the 1900 meter elevation on the east side of Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaii. Since aspects of habitat structure has been known to affect the foraging of insectivorous forest birds as well as the abundance, distribution, and perceptibility of prey, this study was done on the Elepaio, (Chasiempis sandwichensis), an insectivorous bird that is endemic to the Hawaiian islands that inhabits forests of varying structure and degree of human modification. By understanding the effects of habitat structure on foraging, this knowledge may be useful in the conservation of species that have restricted or specialized habitat requirements. This knowledge will also be helpful when making management decisions that will alter habitat structure.
