Summary:
This document describes how the nests of six out of ten bird species that were studied on the island of Hawaii from 1969 - 1975 contained sheep wool as a nesting material. It also describes how, while endemic and introduced birds used wool, there was a significantly higher usage of wool by endemic birds. Also, in a separate study that compared an area that was void of sheep to an area that contained sheep, it seemed that while wool was used due to its availability and binding qualities, the Elepaio was found to consistently travel distances to obtain it while other species used the wool only when it was available within their territories.
