Summary:
This document describes the history of the silverswords, (Argyroxiphium spp., Compositae), that inhabit three locations in Hawaii -- Haleakala, on the island of Maui, as well as on Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, on the island of Hawaii. Described is the abundance of this plant that once existed in Hawaii, as well as the depredation of the silverswords due to insect pests, the overgrazing of the plants by feral goats, and the excessive removal of the swordplants by tourists and commercial collectors during the nineteenth century. However, germination of these plants occurred on several occasions under unexpected and unexplained circumstances on several occasions. As a result, this paper presents experiments and observations that were done on the seed and the germination requirements of the silversword.
