Summary:
In Part 1 of this article, the basic pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment were discussed with regard to the current knowledge on which health care providers base the direct care of high altitude illness such as Acute Mountain Sickness, High Altitude Cerebral Edema, and High Altitude Pulmonary Edema. In this, Part II of this article, the strategies for the prevention of these disorders will be discussed as well as the practical aspects of advising and educating persons who travel to high altitude. A specific focus will be made on the individuals who are at a greater risk for high altitude illness such as pregnant women, infants and young children, and healthy elders. In addition, a special concern of pre-verbal children will be covered relative to the risks of high altitude for this group. The concern is that those from this group, who are too young to voice symptoms of illness, will be at risk for potential serious consequences as a result of a delay in diagnosis and treatment.
