Elepaio Champiempis sandwichensis byani
Summary:
The Elepaio (Chasiempis sandwichensis) exhibits great variation in plumage color on the Island of Hawaii and an analysis of the specimens from localities throughout the island reveals that the variation is geographically based. This study documents the distributions of the three named subspecies of the C. sandwichensis on the island of Hawaii as follows: the C. s. bryani, a pale form that is found at high elevation on the southwestern slopes of Mauna Kea; the C. s. ridgwayi, a dark form that is found in the wet windward forests of the island; and the C. s. sandwichensis, an intermediate form that is found in forests of the Kona region.
