Summary:
This document describes recommendations that was made to the Board of Land and Natural Resources by the Hawaii Audubon Society regarding the draft plan for Mauna Kea in an effort to ensure that serious consideration be given to conflicts that surround the subject of land use and preserving the natural resources of the mountain. The recommendations that were made involved protecting the mamane/naio forest ecosystem management area that is critical habitat for endangered bird species such as the Palila, that there be a gradual reduction in game animals that inhabit this ecosystem through longer hunting seasons in an effort to restore the forest, that the number of observatories built on Mauna Kea be limited to the six that were already planned, that future telescopes be built following a "breathing period" that would allow for the operation of these telescopes to be fully assessed before further construction is allowed, that on-site generators be used to supply electrical power to the observatories, and that mid-level facilities not be sited for astronomers at Hale Pohaku.
