Altitude mountain sickness (AMS)
- Summary:
- A number of pathologies that may be encountered at high altitude, are precipitated by exposure to hypobaric hypoxia, and are often grouped under the vague term, "altitude illness", are discussed in this article. These include sleep disturbances and periodic breathing, high altitude cough, and local cold injury or frostbite. Also discussed are the more severe and possibly life-threatening forms of acute mountain sickness such as high altitude pulmonary and cerebral oedema. These are conditions, whose aetiology is poorly understood, requires rapid treatment that may be difficult to achieve in the mountain environment.
