Summary:
The main objective of this study was to determine patterns of adult nesting behavior of this endangered species. This was done via the use of video surveillance that allowed for cameras to identify nest predators and to quantify parental behavior. It also allowed researchers to collect time budget data that was similar to blind observations but allowed for this to be done more thoroughly due to the researcher's ability to stop, slow, and repeat events that were filmed. It was also possible to record the movements of young chicks as they were in their nest and reduced the amount of interference that would have been caused by observers as filming was able to be done without observers having to approach a nest during data collection. Seven nests were observed by video over a three-year period. Two nests were observed only during the incubation stage, two nests were observed during the nestling stage, and three were observed at both stages. A detailed description of this study and the results, are given here.
