Summary:
Previous studies suggested that five days of the prophylactic standardized herbal extract of the leaf of Ginkgo biloba decreased the incidence of acute mountain sickness (AMS) during gradual ascent. As a result, this trial was designed to determine if ginkgo was an effective prophylactic agent if begun one day prior to rapid ascent. It was the first study to demonstrate that one day of pretreatment with ginkgo 60 mg TID may significantly reduce the severity of AMS prior to rapid ascent from sea level to elevations of 4205 meters.
