Summary:
Due to the nocturnal habits and the inaccessibility of the remote and mountainous nesting colonies of the endangered Hawaiian Petrels or Uau (Pterodroma sandwichensis) and the Newell's Shearwaters or Ao, (Fuffinus auricularis newelli), little information was available of these seabirds in the Hawaiian islands -- with the exception being on the island of Kauai. However, due to the recent declines of the Shearwaters on Kauai and the potential for continued development on all of the main Hawaiian islands there was a need for basic information regarding the distribution, abundance, movement patterns, and population trends of these seabirds on all of the Hawaiian Islands. Therefore, obtaining accurate information was the main objective of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Recovery Plan on both species. This study summarizes the results of radar surveys that were done on these seabirds on the island of Hawaii during the months of May - June in 2001 and 2002 through which limited radar data suggested that a substantial population change did not occur in the Puna District from 1995 to 2001-2002.
