Summary:
The insect fauna of the Hawaiian islands is large and diverse in that 7,979 species, including 2,582 or 32 percent that were non-indigenous, is likely the highest percentage that is known of in the world. Three specimens that are presented in this paper are from a long-term survey that was done by the Biological Resources Division of the United States Geological Survey in an effort to investigate the diet and prey items of the endangered Palila bird (Loxioides bailleui). The Amphiareus constrictus, the Buchananiella continua, and the Orius tristicolor were found not to be indigenous to Hawaii. In addition, the B. continua were also not previously reported to be from the Hawaiian islands. Taking these species into consideration, this makes a total of 21 species that are known to be from the Hawaiian islands, of which 15 are non-indigenous.
