The daily operations of an Infrastructure Supervisor:
Working on the summit of Maunakea, the Infrastructure Supervisor guides a team of technicians that ensure the summit physical plant is ready to operate safely on sky every night. The Infrastructure Supervisor regularly evaluates individual and team performance to proactively guide and develop both to become their fullest potential. At times, the Infrastructure Supervisor will recruit new members of the team to fill vacant positions or better facilitate structural needs. The Infrastructure Supervisor and team support a variety of summit projects by working with an assortment of departments and other shareholders. Working alongside the infrastructure team the Infrastructure Supervisor provides expertise on a slew of technical aspects and safety, while operating machinery and tools.
Requirements
Required Qualifications:
Education
- Associate’s degree in a related technical field (e.g., Machining, Welding, Fabrication, Electronics, HVAC, Automotive/Truck, or Industrial Technology) or equivalent technical qualifications such as a journeyman’s license
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years of leadership or supervisory experience.
Skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment
Preferred Qualifications:
Education
- Associate degree in engineering or a related field.
Experience
- Three (3) years’ experience in an industrial environment with large machinery.
- Experience working at an astronomical observatory

About W. M. Keck Observatory
The W. M. Keck Observatory operates two 10-meter optical/infrared telescopes on the summit of Maunakea on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. The twin telescopes feature a suite of advanced instruments including imagers, multi-object spectrographs, high-resolution spectrographs, integral-field spectroscopy and a world-leading laser guide star adaptive optics system which cancels out much of the interference caused by Earth’s turbulent atmosphere. The Observatory is a private 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and a scientific partnership of the California Institute of Technology, the University of California and NASA.
