About the Role:

As part of Keck’s Public Affairs team, the CEM leads STEM education and workforce development programs that reflect our commitment to the community astronomy model. You will build partnerships with local schools, organizations, and stakeholders to inspire students and connect them with career pathways and learning opportunities in science and engineering.

This position plays a vital role in representing the observatory throughout Hawaiʻi—creating programs, organizing events, and building trust with our community. You will work closely with Keck’s Chief Public Affairs Officer and collaborate across departments to ensure our community efforts reflect our values of stewardship and service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement engaging STEM education and workforce programs rooted in community needs
  • Partner with local educators, nonprofits, businesses, and observatories to deliver impactful outreach
  • Coordinate events, meetings, and internships that expand access to career opportunities
  • Manage budgets, logistics, and program evaluation to ensure meaningful and measurable results
  • Contribute to Keck’s communication efforts and help tell our story of service and discovery
  • Promote inclusivity and respect diverse perspectives in all community interactions

Additional Information

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, communication, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience)
  • 2+ years of experience in community engagement, education, or workforce development
  • Deep understanding of Hawaiʻi’s communities, educational systems, and multicultural values
  • Skilled in building trust, navigating complex relationships, and working across sectors
  • Strong project management and event coordination experience
  • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills
  • Comfortable working evenings or weekends for community events as needed
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel throughout the island

About W. M. Keck Observatory

The W. M. Keck Observatory operates two 10-meter optical/infrared telescopes on the summit of Maunakea on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. The twin telescopes feature a suite of advanced instruments including imagers, multi-object spectrographs, high-resolution spectrographs, integral-field spectroscopy and a world-leading laser guide star adaptive optics system which cancels out much of the interference caused by Earth’s turbulent atmosphere. The Observatory is a private 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and a scientific partnership of the California Institute of Technology, the University of California and NASA.
