The 2024 Hawaiian Word of the Year, mākia, offers a profound message for navigating times of transformation. Meaning “aim, motto, or purpose,” and symbolizing the act of grounding intentions like stakes anchoring a hale (house), mākia inspires individuals and communities to move forward with resilience, clarity, and a steadfast commitment to their kuleana (responsibilities).


UH Hilo alumnus runs Athens Marathon

UH Hilo alumnus Andy Liebner, a former NCAA All-American skier turned educator and scholar, continues to chase new heights as a doctoral student in Greece. Recently, he fulfilled a lifelong dream by running the historic Athens Marathon, proudly representing UH Hilo while pursuing groundbreaking sports psychology research.
