Fall 2024 - Learning, Preparing, Refining

  • Faculty now have a Lamakū user account and one sandbox. Log into Lamakū: https://lamaku.hawaii.edu/

    • Additional sandboxes can be requested by completing the Cohort 1 (UH Hilo and UHCCs) Lamakū Account and Sandbox Request Form. A maximum of 5 sandbox accounts may be requested per user.
    • UH Hilo faculty will be eligible to migrate content from Laulima to Lamakū once CRNs and faculty assignments are confirmed for Spring 2025 courses in Banner. Faculty will then be able to submit the Migration Request form located on the Discover Lamakū website for each course being taught in Spring 2025.
    • A separate migration request form must be submitted for each course for which the faculty member requests migration.
    • If multiple sections of the same course alpha and number (e.g., ENG 100) are being taught in the same format (e.g., 16 weeks), then only one migration of content for ENG 100 migrated from Laulima should be requested. The same Laulima reference site with the migrated content for the course can be copied into multiple course sections in Lamakū.
    • Migration time can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 12 hours, depending upon the accuracy of the information you entered into the request form. For example, if the URL doesnʻt match site name, the URL is for empty course site migration, etc.) the UH System’s Information Technology Services (ITS) Team will have to work with the faculty member to resolve the issue, which will slow down the process.

    • Regardless of whether itʻs Lamakū or any other learning management system, migration is never going to be perfect. Some refining will be required.

  • Multiple Opportunites and Modalities for Lamakū training and resources are available.

Spring 2025 - Delivery - All UH Hilo courses will be taught in Lamakū

  • Laulima will not be available for active instruction for UH Hilo courses after Fall 2024.

  • Student user accounts will be provisioned as registration for Spring 2025 courses begins, and course enrollments are transferred from Banner to Lamakū.

  • Information about non-instructional sites, including migration for them, will be forthcoming via the Discover D2L Brightspace website.

Getting Started With Lamakū

1. Start Early

Start getting familiar with Lamakū now rather than later by following these steps:

  1. Go to Lamakū and click on the blue University of Hawaiʻi Login button. All teaching faculty already have a user account (login is with our UH credentials as we do with Laulima) and one sandbox so you can go in and start getting acclimated to the environment.

  2. Go through the UH Hilo Introduction to Lamakū step-by-step guide. It will give you a very good introduction for your first visit to Lamakū.

  3. Access and review the "Lamakū Instructor Essentials" course site. It serves as a guide to mastering the basics of Lamakū through scaffolding of information. You should see it right away when you log in on the Lamakū organizational homepage. This is an asynchronous resource so it can be accessed at any time and there is no time limit or expectations/pressure.

  4. Review the numerous training resources. Links to webinar recordings and slides can be found on the Discover Lamakū Timeline webpage on the dates they occurred.

2. Learn and Experience

  • View the Lamakū for Instructors: Start Here for information about a course starter template, available resources, and more.

  • Check for Current UH Online Innovation Center (UHOIC) Training and Support Opportunities Through hands-on, Q&A, and peer sharing webinars, the UHOIC offers system-wide training sessions via Zoom for real-time training, including overviews of Lamakū, educational technology-related tools, and other topics important to faculty.

  • Review the Lamakū Discovery Series Sessions The Fall 2024 Discovery Series, hosted by the UH ID PLC, focused on essential features of Lamakū (Brightspace by D2L) for faculty new to the learning management system. Topics followed the flow of building a course, such as content development, activity and assessment, and gradebook setup in a themed manner.
