East Hawai'i Veterans Cemetery No. 1 is the resting place for over 1,500 fallen soldiers and family members. No digital map resources are currently available to help search for and locate grave plots.
Digitizing and mapping the cemetery provides accurate plot maps, remote viewing, and online historical records of each grave plot.
The project was used as a learning opportunity for 48 students in three classes through the UH Hilo Dept. of Geography & Env. Science to collect, process, and deliver geographic and image data. They used RTK, differential GPS, photogrammetry, and GIS to create an orthomosaic map and searchable geodatabase of plot locations and information.
Data provided by the Hawai'i County Department of Parks and Recreation included a PDF file of plots and records. These data were verified in the field based on actual gravestone markings to increase the accuracy of the map and geodatabase.
Remotely captured photos from a DJI Mavic Pro were processed through Pix4D to create a 0.32 cm resolution orthomosiac map of the cemetery.
ArcGIS was used to add plot information to the map and export it in the correct Coordinate Reference System.
Affinity Photo was used to add a seamless background to the map and clean up artifacts from the photogrammetry.
The map is hosted on UH Hilo's Geography Department website. It uses Leaflet and additional plugins to display image and point data, with features including search, zoom, pan, and popups to make the user interface accessible and intuitive.
The map will be available to the public for the friends and family of the fallen soldiers to more easily find their deceased loved ones’ final resting place.
