We are pleased to announce the Fourth Hawaiʻi International Conference on English Language and Literature Studies (HICELLS 2025) hosted by A'Sharqiyah University will be held at A'Sharqiya University Campus in Ibra, Oman on February 19 - 20, 2025. This year's conference theme is "Innovative Approaches to Teaching and Learning in English Language and Literature Studies," aims to explore the cutting-edge methodologies and transformative practices in education.
HICELLS 2025 offers a platform for educators, researchers, students, and scholars in the fields of English language and literature to share their insights, experiences, and research findings. This international conference also provides an opportunity to engage in discussions about innovative teaching approaches in English language and literature.
As the landscape of education rapidly evolves particularly in the wake of the pandemic, there is a pressing need for innovative strategies to effectively teach English as a Second Language (ESL), English as a Foreign Language (EFL), and Literature Studies. This year’s conference will explore the cutting-edge pedagogical strategies that are transforming the teaching and learning of English language and literature in the post-pandemic era.

The abstract should be:
- Between 200 and 250 words and a list of not more than five keywords.
- Must have a clearly defined theoretical framework or approach.

HICELLS 2025 Guidelines for Oral Presentation (20 minutes)
- The time allocated for each presenter is 20 minutes (15 minutes for presentation and 5 minutes for question and answer). Please take note that the session chair will be strict in the timekeeping, so please stick to the time allotted in each presentation.
- Below are some of the specific guidelines that presenters must be familiar:
- If you are using the PowerPoint, make sure that you save it on a thumb drive.
- If you are using videos or audio on your presentation, test them first before the presentation starts.
- If you are using your own computer, please ask for assistance to connect before your presentation.
HICELLS 2025 Speakers

Keynote Speakers
Professor Rod Ellis is Professor in the School of Education at Curtin University, Australia. He has worked in New Zealand, Zambia, the UK, Japan, and the U.S.A for extended periods. He has published a number of books on second language acquisition and teacher education. He has also published EFL/ESL textbooks. His main interest lies in the application of second language theory and research to language teaching.
He is co-author of Analysing Learner Language, and author of Second Language Acquisition, SLA Research and Language Teaching, The Study of Language Acquisition, which won the English Speaking Union's Duke of Edinburgh Book Competition, Understanding Second Language Acquisition, which won the BAAL Book Prize, and Task-based Language Learning and Teaching, all published by Oxford University Press.
Professor Ian Almond is Professor of World Literature at Georgetown University. He is the author of six books, most recently Two Faiths, One Banner (Harvard University Press, 2009) and The Thought of Nirad C. Chaudhuri (Cambridge University Press, 2015), and over fifty articles in a variety of journals including PMLA, Radical Philosophy, ELH, New Literary History and the Harvard Theological Review. He specializes in comparative world literature, with a tri-continental emphasis on Mexico, Bengal and Turkey. His work has been translated into thirteen languages (Albanian, Arabic, German, Korean, Indonesian, Bengali, Bosnian/Serbo-Croat, Russian, Polish, Portuguese, Persian, and Turkish). The Arabic translation of his book Sufism and Deconstruction was shortlisted (one of 7) for the largest literary prize in existence, the Sheikh Zayed Book Prize. The Korean translation of his book Two Faiths One Banner won the Book of the Month award. His sixth book, World Literature Decentered: Beyond the 'West' Through Turkey, Mexico and Bengal (Routledge: New York, 2021) came out last year.
Plenary Speakers
Dr. Andrzej Cirocki joined the Department of Education in October 2014. He teaches on the MA TESOL and MA in Applied Linguistics for (English) Language Teaching programmes. He was Deputy Programme Leader for MA TESOL from 2014 to 2018 and Director of Taught Masters (Admissions and Assessment) from 2018 to 2022. He supervises dissertations and theses in the area of TESOL.
Before joining the Department of Education, He worked as a Lecturer in Applied Linguistics and English Language Teaching at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge. While there, he contributed to undergraduate and postgraduate courses in language teacher education and developed and led an MA TESOL and Materials Development programme.
Dr. Cirocki has an MA (English Philology) and a PhD (Linguistics/TEFL) from Adam Mickiewicz University, Poland, and an MA (Applied Linguistics and TEFL) from the University of Portsmouth, UK. He is a CELTA teacher and a CELTA teacher trainer. He has been a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since 2013.
He is the Editor-in-chief of The European Journal of Applied Linguistics and TEFL.
Dr. Nathanael Rudolph(PhD, University of Maryland, College Park) is an associate professor of sociolinguistics and language education at Kindai University (近畿大学) in Higashiosaka, Japan. Nathanael’s research explores themes including teacher and student negotiations of being, becoming and belonging within and transcending (language) education, and transdisciplinary, community-based approaches to identity, experience and (in)justice. His most recent work is Transcending language education in Japan: Borderland accounts of being, becoming and belonging (Bloomsbury), a forthcoming volume co-edited with Madoka Hammine. Nathanael is a managing editor for Asian Englishes (Routledge) and an associate editor for the Journal of Language, Identity and Education (Taylor & Francis).

Dr. Faisal Almaamari (ORCID: 0000-0003-3640-2274) is currently associate professor at the English and Translation Department at the College of Arts and Social Sciences, Sultan Qaboos University, Oman. He received a BA in TEFL from Sultan Qaboos University (1999), an MA of Arts in English Language Teaching from the University of Warwick (2001), United Kingdom, and a PhD in Critical Applied Linguistics at the University of Bristol (2011). His main research interests include applied linguistics, language acquisition, teacher education, contrastive rhetoric, and research methods. He can be contacted at faisalf@squ.edu.om
Dr. Lorraine Pe Symaco is Professor at Zhejiang University, China. She was UNESCO chair in international and comparative educational research with special reference to Southeast Asia and Founding Director of the Centre for Research in International and Comparative Education (CRICE) at the University of Malaya, Malaysia.
She received her DPhil in Education from the University of Oxford, UK.
Dr. Symaco's research interests are in the areas of international education development and higher education. She is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of International and Comparative Education (JICE) and series co-editor (with Rupert Maclean) of Education in the Asia Pacific Region: Issues, Concerns and Prospects (Springer). She is also actively engaged in studies pertaining to Education in South East Asia and currently working on an international handbook on the topic. The handbook will look at 10 country cases of the ASEAN and Timor Leste.
