We are pleased to announce the Fourth Hawaiʻi International Conference on English Language and Literature Studies (HICELLS 2025) hosted by A'Sharqiyah University will be held at A'Sharkiya University Campus in Ibra, Oman on February 26 - 27, 2025. This year's conference theme is "Innovative Approaches to Teaching and Learning in English Language and Literature Studies," aims to explore the cutting-edge methodologies and transformative practices in education.
HICELLS 2025 offers a platform for educators, researchers, students, and scholars in the fields of English language and literature to share their insights, experiences, and research findings. This international conference also provides an opportunity to engage in discussions about innovative teaching approaches in English language and literature.
As the landscape of education rapidly evolves particularly in the wake of the pandemic, there is a pressing need for innovative strategies to effectively teach English as a Second Language (ESL), English as a Foreign Language (EFL), and Literature Studies. This year’s conference will explore the cutting-edge pedagogical strategies that are transforming the teaching and learning of English language and literature in the post-pandemic era.

- Between 200 and 250 words and a list of not more than five keywords.
- Must have a clearly defined theoretical framework or approach.

HICELLS 2025 Guidelines for Oral Presentation (20 minutes)
- The time allocated for each presenter is 20 minutes (15 minutes for presentation and 5 minutes for question and answer). Please take note that the session chair will be strict in the timekeeping, so please stick to the time allotted in each presentation.
- Below are some of the specific guidelines that presenters must be familiar:
- If you are using the PowerPoint, make sure that you save it on a thumb drive.
- If you are using videos or audio on your presentation, test them first before the presentation starts.
- If you are using your own computer, please ask for assistance to connect before your presentation.
HICELLS 2025 Speakers
Keynote Speakers
Dr. Nathanael Rudolph (PhD, University of Maryland, College Park) is an Associate Professor of Sociolinguistics and Language Education at Kindai University in Higashiosaka, Japan. His research explores themes including teacher and student negotiations of being, becoming and belonging within and transcending (language) education, and transdisciplinary, community-based approaches to “criticality.” Nathanael is a managing editor for Asian Englishes and associate editor for the Journal of Language, Identity and Education.
Dr. Kirsten Møllegaard is Professor and Chair of English at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo. She received her Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Arts degrees from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and has been teaching at UH Hilo since 2005. She specializes in oral tradition and folklore. Her research reflects a broad range of interests in literature and film, specifically the intersectionality of places, people, and stories past and present. She is co-editor of Narratives of Place in Literature and Film (Routledge 2019) and manuscript reviewer for Palgrave Macmillan. She has contributed numerous book chapters on fairy tales, film, literature, comics, and graphic novels. She has coauthored articles on literary analysis with students. Her research articles and book reviews have appeared in the International Journal of Comic Art, Journal of American Culture, International Journal of Literary Humanities, Journal of Popular Culture, Supernatural Studies, Western American Literature, Modern Journal of English Language Teaching and Literature, and Folklore.
Plenary Speakers
Dr. James McLellan is an Associate Professor of English Language and Linguistics at the University of Brunei Darussalam. With a rich teaching background spanning secondary and tertiary education in Brunei, the UK, France, Malaysia, Australia, and Aotearoa (New Zealand), he has accumulated a wealth of experience in English as a Second Language (ESL), Lecturing, Editing, Curriculum Development, and Academic Writing. Dr. McLellan possesses a strong educational foundation, holding a Bachelor's degree in Medieval and Modern Languages, specializing in French and German, from the prestigious University of Cambridge. His academic journey continued with an MA in Applied Linguistics & ELT from the University of York, culminating in a PhD from Curtin University of Technology, Australia. His doctoral research focused on Malay-English Language Alternation in Brunei online discussion forums, adding to his extensive academic achievements. As an academic, Dr. McLellan's areas of expertise encompass Language Alternation, Multilingual Education, Southeast Asian Englishes, and Borneo indigenous language maintenance strategies, underlining his commitment to the diverse and evolving field of linguistics.
Recipient of the UH Board of Regents' Medal for Excellence in Teaching, Dr. Pia Arboleda holds a Doctor of Arts degree in Language and Literature (major in Literature), a master's degree in Language and Literature (major in Filipino) and a Bachelor of Science in Commerce (major in Marketing) from De La Salle University. For high school and grade school, she went to St. Scholastica's College, Manila. She teaches Fil 435: Translation Theory and Practice, IP 273E: Philippine History and Culture, IP 396: Philippine Folklore, IP 431: Rizal's Life and Writing, IP 368B: Philippine Film, among others. Prior to joining UH, she served as Visiting Professor at Osaka University where she taught Southeast Asian Culture, Philippine Literature, Language and History for four and a half years. She was assistant professor in Filipino at University of the Philippines Baguio, assistant professor in Filipino at University of the Philippines Manila and instructor at De La Salle University. She also taught gender studies at St. Scholastica's College, Manila. Outside the academe, she was Assistant Program Manager of CARE Philippines, Executive Director of Environmental Legal Defense (Endefense), Executive Director of the Remedios AIDS Foundation, and External Affairs Officer at the Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement (PRRM). Dr. Arboleda is also a poet and creative writer. Her works have appeared in Forbidden Fruit: Women Write the Erotic, Kung Ibig Mo: Love Poetry by Women, Essays on Women, The Baguio We Know, Essays in Philippine Language and Literature, among others. She now produces multi-media instructional materials on Philippine folklore and films. From 2011-2021, she served as coordinator of the Filipino and Philippine Culture program. She is now Director of the Center for Philippine Studies and Chair of the Department of Indo-Pacific Languages and Literatures.
Featured Speakers
Dr. Vivien Grace A. Jubahib is a full-time professor at San Pedro College in the Teacher Education Department, Davao City Philippines. She is a graduate of Doctor of Philosophy in Education Major in Applied Linguistics from the University of the Immaculate Conception. She is also an active member and the former Executive Secretary of the Philippine Association for Teachers and Educators in Region 11. Last 2017, she was conferred as a Fellow of the Royal Institute Education Doctor (FRIEdr) of Singapore. Aside from being a professor, she has been a resource speaker at seminars and has been involved actively in community services and research where her outputs were presented at local and international conferences. Last May 19, 2023, she was one of the Keynote Speakers for the First Srinakharinwirot University International Symposium of Education (SWUIS-EDU) in Thailand on the topic “Educator’s Role and Preparedness for Globalization”. As an educator, she became part of the team of RQAT of Region 11 and a member of the CPD monitoring team in Region 11 for PAFTE. Added to her credentials, she is part of the Interlink pool of visiting professors at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, USA, and UNISULA in Indonesia, and Thailand. She has also been part of the research journal reviewer for the Malaysia English Language Teaching Association (MELTA), Journal of English Education, Literature, and Culture of UNISSULA, Indonesia.
Dr. Leah Gustilo an associate professor and Research Fellow in the Department of English and Applied Linguistics at De La Salle University, is the current Vice President of the Linguistic Society of the Philippines, an Article Editor of Sage Open Publications, and the Chief Editor of Modern Journal of Studies in English Language Teaching and Literature. Formerly, she was the Director of De La Salle University’s Center for English and Lifelong Learning and Chief Editor of the Philippine ESL Journal. She was involved in several research projects funded by the British Council, Fund to Assistance for Private Education, Philippines; Japan International Cooperation Agency, Philippines; Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc.; and University Research Coordination Office of De La Salle University. She has published articles on Philippine English, online self-presentation, internet talk, use of technology in the classroom, and ESL writing and assessment and has presented her research works at conferences in Asia, the USA, and Europe. She is actively involved in teacher training as a resource person on topics such as research ethics, getting published, action research, and language teaching and assessment.
