International Women’s Day 2020 is celebrating a number of missions this year to help forge a gender equal world. A main mission is to celebrate women’s achievements and increase their visibility. Here are ten stories of the past year from UH Hilo Stories doing just that for extraordinary women from the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo.
Teams of UH Hilo Vulcan athletes and staff from the Division of Student Affairs read their fave Dr. Seuss books to schoolchildren of East Hawai‘i on March 2 as part of nationwide Read Across America Day, a day to inspire kids to read.

In a collaborative study led by Matthew Knope, findings show animal biodiversity in modern oceans is best explained by lower extinction rates in animal groups that are ecologically diverse, rather than by higher origination rates, as previously predicted.
Research specialist Teddy Pruyne, a 2018 astronomy grad from UH Hilo, and his teammate Kacper Wierzchos discovered a mini-moon Feb. 15. Out of about a million known asteroids, this is just the second asteroid known to orbit Earth.
