UH Hilo alumnus Jake Rodrique thrives in the field of agriculture

Jake Rodrique once thought college wasn’t the place for him. But that all changed through the guidance of a few extraordinary people.
“I treat the students like family and each time they make progress, I feel like a proud parent,” says biologist Li Tao about the transition to online teaching.
By all indications, Assistant Professor of Horticulture Sharad Marahatta’s hybrid teaching strategies are extremely successful at keeping students engaged and learning despite all the challenges caused by the pandemic.
Most courses at UH Hilo are remote, but an exception was made for the laboratory component of biology, chemistry, geology, marine science and nursing classes. The strictest of health and safety protocols are practiced at all times.

Researchers at UH Hilo are observing injected eggs; the next step will be to rear them to see if they now have stable genetic material that could be passed to offspring. The research is being done strictly in laboratory colonies, not in the wild.
