The newest Vulcans at UH Hilo are exploring their campus and island home this week, preparing for the start of 2025 fall semester classes on Monday.
The focus of the award-winning work addresses Hawaiʻi’s long-standing physician shortage: telehealth training engages pharmacists and nurses to serve as “physician extenders” in rural and medically underserved areas.
The 22 language leaders were nominated by their communities and represent Native American languages from across the country, including Tlingit, Ojibwemowin, Osage, Yugtun, Shawnee Cherokee, and ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi.
Students Lauren Runnels and Ian O’Hollaren, mentored by Professor of Marine Science Karla McDermid, conducted research on an innovative cultivation method of a Hawaiian seaweed that has the potential to boost commercial limu production statewide.
Inaugural cohort includes 10 from Hawaiʻi County Police Department, Honolulu Police Department, and the Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement.
