ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi PhD candidate Bruce Torres-Fischer featured in new video series on UH transfer success
Bruce Torres Fischer, as a first-generation student says it felt unreal, but UH community colleges gave him a starting point, and transferring to UH Hilo kept his momentum.

In a new video series launched by the University of Hawaiʻi community colleges featuring real student transfer stories across the UH System, first up is Bruce Torres-Fischer, a first-generation student who began at Hawaiʻi CC and is now a doctoral candidate in Hawaiian and Indigenous Language and Culture Revitalization at UH Hilo.
Bruce Torres-Fischer didn’t have a plan — but studying ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi and preserving Hawaiian voices led him to a PhD. As a first-generation student, it felt unreal — but UH Community Colleges gave him a starting point, and transferring to UH Hilo kept his momentum.
Featuring alumni from all seven campuses, the new video series shares stories of students who built their foundation at a UH community college before transferring to a four-year UH campus, demonstrating how starting at a community college can lead to careers in law, technology, education, and beyond.
