University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo Chancellor Bonnie D. Irwin sat down with Living 808 host Mickey Monis at KHON2.
Honolulu (KHON2) – The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo is seeing strong momentum across campus, with growing enrollment, record-setting student success, and new programs designed to meet the needs of Hawaiʻi Island communities. In a recent update, Chancellor Bonnie Irwin shared how the university is evolving while staying true to its role as Hawaiʻi Island’s university.
Right now, campus energy is driven by measurable growth and renewed investment in student success. UH Hilo welcomed a freshman class that grew by more than 17% last fall — the largest increase in four years — outpacing freshman growth at other UH campuses.
The university also recorded the highest student retention rate in its history, meaning more students are returning for their second year. Campus improvements, new student support programs, and a partnership with a national enrollment management team are helping the university share its story with students across Hawaiʻi and beyond.
According to Irwin, the focus is clear: creating a campus environment where students feel they belong, thrive academically, and graduate with confidence.
