With a major in marine science and a minor in Hawaiian studies, UH Hilo student Shayla Kiyota can combine traditional Hawaiian culture with her love of the ocean.
In the newest video from Vulcan VIBE, a first-generation college student with a passion for the environment, Shayla Kiyota, from Pearl City High School on Oʻahu, talks about wanting to stay in Hawaiʻi to further her education, so she chose the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo. With a major in marine science and a minor in Hawaiian studies, she can combine traditional Hawaiian culture with her love of the ocean.
“I really have a passion for the environment and the ocean while also continuing traditional practices and continuing the culture,” she says. “I really wanted to stay here.”
