Each year, UH Hilo celebrates United Nations Day with an international parade, sharing of song and dance, and informational tables, all highlighting the many different countries represented at UH Hilo.
The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo celebrated 2024 United Nations Day on Oct. 25.
Each year the International Student Association hosts the event, highlighting the many different countries represented at UH Hilo. About 250 international students from nearly 40 different countries around the globe are students at the university.
The event is intended to engage the campus community so they can learn about the different countries around the world — their achievements, characteristics, and challenges — as well as to bring international students together as a community and highlight their presence on campus.
“The event demonstrates unity among different peoples and nations around the world and promotes the ability of people-to-people exchange as a way to create a more peaceful and just world,” says Jim Mellon, director of International Student Services. “The International Student Association, the organizer of the event, embraces the United Nations’ values of peace, dignity, and equality for all on a healthy planet.”
In addition to a Parade of Nations from Campus Center to Mookini Library’s lanai, international students also performed dances and shared informational displays about their countries in a display area on the lanai.
