Podcast: Talking story with UH Hilo’s jazz aficionado Trever Veilleux

On the Backstage Sonoma Podcast, Trever Veilleux talks about his upbringing, coming to UH Hilo 20 years ago, his life as a musician on Hawaiʻi Island, and more.

Just released on YouTube is a 2020 Backstage Sonoma Podcast interview with Trever Veilleux, a University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo alumnus now faculty who teaches the university’s jazz orchestra class. In “Talking Story with Musical Director Trever Veilleux” (posted on YouTube at right, originally released in Dec. 2020), the musician talks about his upbringing, unconventional exposure to music as a child, coming to UH Hilo 20 years ago, his life as a musician on Hawaiʻi Island, and more.

Veilleux is director of the UH Hilo Jazz Orchestra, and since 2013 has headed an annual Frank Zappa tribute show, now a staple of UH Hilo Performing Arts Center’s productions garnishing international acclaim.

“I always get excited for these shows,” says Veilleux. “I grew up listening to Zappa so it’s always exciting for me to be able to share the music with the band and the audience.”
