UH Hilo pharmacy students and faculty showcase their research at symposium
UH Hilo pharmacy students and faculty presented their research at the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy Student Research Symposium held April 27, 2024.
Pharmacy students and faculty at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo presented their research at the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy Student Research Symposium held on campus April 27, 2024.
Keynote
Keynote speaker was an alumnus of the program, Garret Hino, now a public health pharmacist and interim manager of the healthcare associated infections and antimicrobial resistance program at the Hawaiʻi Department of Health.
Hino, one of only two board-certified infectious disease pharmacists in the state, started the job in February of 2022, where he focuses on promoting antimicrobial stewardship that includes appropriate use of antibiotics.
“I’m part of a DOH team working to establish a relationship with the staff at long-term care facilities and acute care hospitals around the state,” says Hilo.
He says his goals are to optimize antimicrobial stewardship practices through better education, and to reduce the development of antimicrobial resistance that can occur from inappropriate antibiotic use.
“I’m really happy to be able to work in my home state and serve our local communities,” he says.
Hino completed his bachelor of science in biology at UH Hilo and graduated from the university’s pharmacy college in 2018. He was selected for a one-year residency at the college, and then went on to complete a two-year infectious disease fellowship at Loma Linda University Medical Center in California in 2021.
In his keynote at the symposium, he talked about the skills he learned while doing research as a student at the college and how it boosted his career as a pharmacist.
