For this week’s word, in honor of the annual Merri Monarch Festival underway this week in Hilo, UH Hilo alumnus Kekailiko Medeiros shares “hula.”

Each Wednesday, Hale Kuamo‘o, the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo’s Hawaiian Language Center, posts a new “Word of the Week” as part of a weekly series of short videos called Mo‘ohua.
Once a week, a single ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i word is introduced along with its meaning and an example sentence of its usage.
For this week’s word, in honor of the annual Merri Monarch Festival underway this week in Hilo, UH Hilo alumnus Kekailiko Medeiros shares “hula.”
Greetings with aloha! “Hula” is the word of this week. Hula is the practice that a person does to tell an ancient or modern story through the movement of the body, the motion of the hands, and the motion of the feet while one chants or sings a song. Here is “hula” in a sentence, “Due to this being the week of the Merrie Monarch, let us all enjoy the beautiful hula performances that will be showcased by various hālau.” That is all, mahalo!
Medeiros is a 2022 UH Hilo graduate who earned a bachelor of arts in Hawaiian studies and a certificate in ʻōlelo Hawai‘i from Ka Haka ‘Ula O Ke‘elikōlani College of Hawaiian Language.
