On Jan. 26, 2023, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) announced the College of Business and Economics (CoBE) at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo has successfully extended their global accreditation in business.

The college is one of only two business schools in the state of Hawaiʻi with AACSB accreditation (the Shidler College of Business at UH Mānoa is the other). As of June 2022, less than 6 percent of the estimated 16,563 business schools worldwide hold this prestigious accreditation.

“What does this mean for our students? It means that CoBE can assure them of quality programming and rigorous standards along with a focus on continuous improvement,” says Todd Inouye, director of the college. “Students can rest assured that the business and accounting education they receive while at CoBE is likely above the standards of other non-accredited peer institutions.”

In 2003, the UH Hilo School of Business became the College of Business and Economics (CoBE), which was first accredited in 2005. The college just completed a full cycle from its strategic plan, which included ongoing program assessment related to accreditation from AACSB.

Achieving accreditation is a process of rigorous internal focus, engagement with an AACSB-assigned mentor, and peer-reviewed evaluation. Every AACSB-accredited school has demonstrated a focus on excellence in teaching, research, curricula development, and student learning.

Inouye says this successful extension is attributed to a team effort from all CoBE students, faculty, and staff.

“A special thank you goes out to (Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs) Kris Roney and former UH Hilo Interim Chancellor and now Emeritus Professor of Business Administration and Economics Marcia Sakai. Both were instrumental in assisting the faculty and staff of CoBE to secure extension.”

He adds, “This is a significant achievement and one which remains a shared priority for all of the CoBE faculty.”
