Watch UH President David Lassner’s Nov. 17, 2022 report to the Board of Regents. The meeting was held at the UH Hilo Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy. It was the first BOR meeting held on a neighbor island campus since November 2019 due to the pandemic.

The UH Board of Regents approved a new six-year strategic plan at its Nov. 17, 2022, meeting at the UH Hilo Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy. The UH System Strategic Plan 2023–2029 will guide the state’s only public higher education system and includes vision and mission statements, foundational principles, and four imperatives with metrics to measure success.

Director of Counseling Services Frank Kuo receives tenure.

Patsy Iwasaki, Assistant Professor of English, received a grant from the Eurasia Foundation (from Asia) that supports the ENG 257 Multicultural Literature course this semester to explore, encourage, and strengthen international, cross-cultural and global understanding and education with students. On Dec. 7, Chancellor Bonnie Irwin will greet and welcome Eurasia Foundation (from Asia) Chair Yoji Sato via Zoom as he presents his lecture, “The World Will Become One.”

Professor of Marine Science Marta deMaintenon publishes new genetic research showing evolution of marine snail. Classification of the Columbellidae family of marine snails has always been done through the study of shells and feeding traits, but Prof. de Maintenon is modernizing that system with her genetic data of the species.


Caroline Lorenzo joins the Office of University Relations as secretary (temporary assignment). Caroline was previously with the pharmacy college.


At statewide conference, students share objectives of new UH Hilo mentoring program. The student-designed Ka Pouhana Mentoring Program has university student mentors paired with faculty members to give individualized support to high school students through their first two years at UH Hilo.
