Administration
Chancellor Bonnie Irwin’s Monthly Column: Who are our students?
Todd Inouye, associate professor of management, is named the permanent director of the College of Business and Economics. He will continue to teach for the remainder of fall semester and begin full responsibilities as director in January 2023. He joined UH Hilo in fall 2019 from Niagara University, New York. His area of expertise is in the competitive context and firm-level strategy of small to medium-sized enterprises. He has served as department chair at the college since 2021.
Sherrie Padilla, enrollment services manager and director of financial aid, is appointed interim associate vice chancellor for student affairs overseeing enrollment services (Admissions, Financial Aid, Registrar’s Office, Student Employment).
Tim Moore is appointed executive director of student support and well-being (Counseling Services, Medical Services, Disability Services, Campus Recreation, Student Health and Wellness Programs, Student Care and Conduct), and is serving as interim dean of students.
Alumni
Naleen Naupaka Andrade, biology alumna, was honored with the Ō‘ō award, one of the most prestigious awards specifically for Native Hawaiians. Andrade, who is a UH Mānoa professor of psychiatry, was honored by the Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce for her significant contributions to advance the Native Hawaiian community.
Kekoa Harman, a UH Hilo alumnus now an associate professor of Hawaiian studies and Hawaiian language at UH Hilo’s Ka Haka ‘Ula O Ke‘elikōlani College of Hawaiian Language, and his wife, Pelehonuamea Harman, a UH Hilo alumna now a certified Hawaiian medium teacher at the university’s Hawaiian language medium laboratory school Ke Kula ‘O Nāwahīokalani‘ōpu‘u, spent five days in residency at the Kennedy Center in D.C. Oct. 3-7, dedicating their time to creating new teachings for their haumāna on Hawai‘i Island.
Community Outreach
Donations to the 2022-2023 Hawai‘i Island United Way’s Annual Workplace Campaign are being accepted through Nov. 18, 2022. Donations help those less fortunate or down on their luck in our community, nurtures individuals and families, identifies specific needs and fills them, and help to build a safer and healthier community through agencies here on Hawai‘i Island. Donations can be made via the new online option (enter UH Hilo as the company name) and also let Lei Kapono know of the online donation. Mahalo!
