Community Outreach
UH Hilo pharmacy college receives grant to further address statewide health disparities. Associate Professor Wesley Sumida and Director of Continuing and Distance Education and Strategic Planning Karen Pellegrin are heading the project aimed to develop a statewide infrastructure to correct existing health disparities with medication use among Hawai‘i’s Indigenous populations.

Faculty
UH Hilo will receive $532K in state funds for 12 faculty positions at the university’s School of Nursing. The statewide initiative, which Gov. David Ige included in his budget request to the state legislature that lawmakers approved during the 2022 legislative session, will help UH graduate more nurses to meet the workforce demands of the state.

Through an internship in U.S. congressman’s Hilo office, Leoshina Kariha hopes to gain experience working within government and apply it to a future position with the government of her homeland Papua New Guinea.
