Everyone is reminded that the 10-campus UH System is tobacco free. Tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes and vapes, cigarettes, cigars, pipes and all forms of smoking and chewing tobacco on UH campuses and properties are prohibited. Return of the Dance Collective live performance at UH Hilo Performing Arts Center is happening Sept. 16. It will be the first live performance of the collective since 2019. More information.

Faculty
The design is unveiled for U.S. coin honoring Edith Kanakaʻole. The award-winning composer who taught at Hawai‘i Community College and UH Hilo, is one of five American women to be minted on new quarters as part of the 2023 honorees for the American Women Quarters™ Program.
Sarah Marusek, Professor of Political Science, received the Gherardi Davis Prize for her co-edited volume, Flags, Color, and the Legal Narrative: Public Memory, Identity, and Critique, from the Flag Research Center that aims to promote advancement of knowledge and understanding on the use of “symbols to express political, cultural, and social ideals through flags and flag-related material culture.”
Shugeng Cao, Professor, Pharmaceutical Sciences, is the co-author of “Fusarium fruiting body microbiome member Pantoea agglomerans inhibits fungal pathogenesis by targeting lipid rafts,” (May 2022) published in Nature Microbiology.

Human Resources
The Employee Self Service (ESS) through PeopleSoft is now available to all UH employees. ESS provides access to personal details and employment information, including payroll notification forms (PNFs), current and historical employment, and links to Hawai`i Information Portal for payroll information and Office of Human Resources Portal.
Research
UH Hilo marine scientists are collaborating with colleagues in Alaska to discover common ground on climate adaptation. Professor Tracy Wiegner, Associate Professor Steven Colbert, Adjunct Associate Professor Tim Grabowski (a unit leader with the U.S. Geological Survey-Hawai‘i Cooperative Fishery Research Unit in Hilo), along with graduate student Walter Boger visited multiple sites during a trip to Alaska over the summer.
